Στην Αθήνα θα πραγματοποιηθεί το 20ο ετήσιο συνέδριο της Παγκόσμιας Εταιρείας του Πολλαπλού Μυελώματος (International Myeloma Society), από την Τετάρτη 27 Σεπτεμβρίου 2023 έως και το Σάββατο 30 Σεπτεμβρίου 2023.
Το συνέδριο αυτό αποτελεί την κορυφαία επιστημονική εκδήλωση για το πολλαπλούν μυέλωμα παγκοσμίως, γι' αυτό και έχουν δηλώσει συμμετοχή άνω των 3.000 συνέδρων (ιατροί, βιολόγοι, ερευνητές στις βασικές επιστήμες, νοσηλευτές). Αυτός ο αριθμός είναι ο μεγαλύτερος που έχει καταγραφεί για το συγκεκριμένο συνέδριο.
Η Παγκόσμια Εταιρεία του Πολλαπλού Μυελώματος (IMS) αποτελεί τον κύριο παγκόσμιο οργανισμό για την έρευνα και αντιμετώπιση του πολλαπλού μυελώματος και την ενημέρωση ασθενών και συγγενών τους. Η Ελλάδα, μέσω της Μονάδας Πλασματοκυτταρικών Δυσκρασιών της Θεραπευτικής Κλινικής της Ιατρικής Σχολής του ΕΚΠΑ (Νοσοκομείο Αλεξάνδρα), υπό τη Διεύθυνση του Καθηγητή Θάνου Δημόπουλου, μετέχει ενεργά στη λειτουργία της Παγκόσμιας Εταιρείας του Πολλαπλού Μυελώματος και κατέχει ιδιαίτερα σημαντική θέση μεταξύ των χωρών που ασχολούνται με την έρευνα και τη θεραπεία στο πολλαπλούν μυέλωμα.
Συγκεκριμένα, πολλές νέες θεραπευτικές αγωγές για την αντιμετώπιση του πολλαπλού μυελώματος έχουν λάβει έγκριση από τον Αμερικανικό Οργανισμό Φαρμάκων, τον Ευρωπαϊκό και τον Ελληνικό Οργανισμό Φαρμάκων μετά από κλινικές μελέτες που πραγματοποιήθηκαν και με συμμετοχή της Θεραπευτικής Κλινικής της Ιατρικής Σχολής του ΕΚΠΑ (Νοσοκομείο Αλεξάνδρα).
Με βάση τα ανωτέρω, στο συνέδριο που ξεκινάει την επόμενη εβδομάδα στην Αθήνα, οι Καθηγητές της Θεραπευτικής Κλινικής Θάνος Δημόπουλος, Ευάγγελος Τέρπος και Ευστάθιος Καστρίτης είναι μέλη της Οργανωτικής Επιτροπής, μαζί με την Ειρήνη Κατωδρύτου, Διευθύντρια ΕΣΥ στην Αιματολογική Κλινική του Θεαγένειου Αντικαρκινικού Νοσοκομείου της Θεσσαλονίκης.
Το συνέδριο θα καλύψει όλο το φάσμα του πολλαπλού μυελώματος, από τη διάγνωση μέχρι τη θεραπεία και τις επιπλοκές της νόσου, καθώς και τη νεότερη κλινική έρευνα. Ιδιαίτερη αναφορά θα γίνει στην ανοσοθεραπεία με τροποποιημένα λεμφοκύτταρα (CAR-T cells) και με διΐδικά αντισώματα (BiTEs) που, σε συνδυασμό με πολλά καινοτόμα φάρμακα, δημιουργούν τις προϋποθέσεις για μακρά επιβίωση και πιθανά για ίαση των ασθενών.
